Some Like it Hot (1959)

“Real diamonds! They must be worth their weight in gold!” Maybe “nobody’s perfect” but the combination of the delicious Marilyn Monroe coupled with the madcap comic timing of Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis under the watchful eye of star director Billy Wilder is as near to cinema perfection as you’re likely to see. So much so that in a recent poll by the American Film Institute, Some Like It Hot came out on the top spot in the search for the cinema’s all-time funniest movie. Curtis and Lemmon play struggling musicians who go on the run with an all-girl band to escape mobsters out for their blood after they witness the legendary St. Valentine’s Day massacre. What follows is a rollercoaster ride of quick fire gags, slapstick and bawdy cases of mistaken identity. Despite Monroe’s alleged misbehavior behind the scenes, what transfers to the screen is pure magic which goes some way to make up for this disc’s astonishing lack of extra features.
