You could hardly say that chocolate is traditional in Japan because it isn’t; sweet-toothed Japanese people are more than likely to indulge in delicacies made from bean paste, sesame or rice rather than a rum truffle or a nut praline. Therefore it’s hardly surprising that Tsetsuko chocolates partly take their inspiration from France. However an East meets West approach is certainly also in evidence here. The fillings of these chocolates are partly inspired by Japan, partly by Europe. Expect to sample flavours such as Yuzu, orange, Green Tea, chocolate crème, ginger, sesame or brown sugar. The chocolates are all delicately hand-painted with designs such as plums, roses, lily of the valley and violets. Madame Tsetsuko’s chocolates are currently only available for purchase in Japan although if you’re lucky once a year they do make an appearance in Paris at the Salon du Chocolat where you can also see them being made.
