Hamburg’s Chinese teahouse has been a hit with locals and visitors since opening in 2008. The complex, a gift from Hamburg’s sister city Shanghai, brought fine Chinese tea culture and cuisine to Germany’s main port city.
Located next to the Ethnographic Museum, the colorful Chinese teahouse complex was built in just one year from plans based on a famous teahouse in Shanghai. The complex also houses the "Hamburg-Shanghai Europe Tourism Culture."
"It's really a piece of China in Hamburg," said Mayor Ole von Beust said at the opening, explaining that the site would be used as a space for Chinese cultural events, such as lectures, readings and exhibitions.
Visitors to the tea house in Hamburg gain an insight into traditional Chinese architecture. An authentic stone staircase with the figures in the hall leadts to a courtyard and then a small artificial lake.
Next to the lake, one finds the "Huxinting teahouse" (which means something like Pavilion by the lake), and the restaurant "Lu Bolang."
The art of tea drinking in China is recreated perfectly at the Hamburg teahouse. Main dishes at the restaurant costs 10-40 euros; specials like Peking duck cost 108 euros; while appetizers range from 6 to 8 euros. The tea service varies in price based on the tea one chooses.
