An American journalist recently made the following dead-on observation: “Rock stars used to trash hotels. Now they own them.” How true. U2 are not just a successful rock band but also the owners of the Clarence in Dublin.
Located in the heart of the trendy Temple Bar neighborhood with a breath-taking view of the Liffey River, the Clarence gives an excellent reflection of 21st century Ireland. The atmosphere is simple yet elegant, with a unique arts and crafts style characterized by a mix of American Oak, leather sofas, and bold colors – cardinal red, royal blue, and gold. This timeless yet modern look dominates all fifty rooms, from “The Tea Room” restaurant to the rooftop terrace with whirlpool. With a bit of luck you just might catch a U2 sighting – or even an impromptu performance. The band performed “Beautiful Day” and “Elevation” on the hotel roof for a video recording which meant that Bono, The Edge, and Co. had to play each song repeatedly, over and over again. A crowd of excited listeners gathered on the streets around the building but the best seats went to the hotel’s guests who were allowed onto the roof to join the party.
