Muff’s story gives a lot of insight into his preference for non-conformity. After an apprenticeship as a goldsmith, he went on to win the craftsmen Olympics in goldsmith. Even though he never finished school, he was accepted into Cologne’s design school because of his “exceptional artistic abilities.” He funded his schooling from the profits of a bar he and his friends opened. Patrick Muff’s jewelry is handcrafted and up to 90% pure sterling silver. It has been described as “tattoos poured into steel”. This is a reflection of the symbols that appear again and again in his collections: crosses, anchors, lilies, flaming hearts and skulls.
