Luxury is a completely subjective experience. What one may find absolutely heavenly may be excruciating for another, and only you can decide. However, just to get away from the typical luxury hotel experience, we thought we’d show you some of the other options out there.

Here’s where you can put yourself to the test, see things most mere mortals never get to, spend your time outdoors, and just generally have a ball getting in touch with your inner adventurer. Our suggestions for the adrenaline seeker extraordinaire:

Trophy Hunting in Africa

How about a 21 day hunting expedition with the opportunity to shoot your own big game, such as a buffalo, lion, or elephant, and claim a trophy for your wall?

Where: Near Johannesburg When: Year round With whom: African Sky What to bring: Your own rifles and hunting gear (gear is also available for hire) Cost : $78,500

Mount Everest Climb

Climb the tallest and most challenging mountain in the world accompanied by expert guides. Everest may have become somewhat more accessible in the last few years, but reaching the summit is still considered an elite feat.

Where: Kathmandu When: March 30 – June 1 2013 With whom: Alpine Ascents International What to bring: Personal gear, sleeping bags, extreme fitness Cost: $85,000 Prerequisites: You need to book half a year in advance. You have to have completed a weeks training. Other mountain climbing experience is highly recommended.

North Pole Ice Diving

An 8 -10 day North Pole Expedition and an ice dive close to the pole. Not for the faint of heart, or those that don’t deal with cold well, this is still unquestionably one of the most exhilarating things you may do in your life.

Where: North Pole (Longyearbyen) When: End of March to end of April With whom: Waterproof Expeditions What to bring: diving equipment specifically suited to your needs that is able to withstand arctic conditions Cost: from 30,000 euro Prerequisites: Expect temperatures of -15C to -35C, travel starts from Oslo. You have to have completed a Pati Ice Diver Certificate and have done at least 100 dives

Virgin Galactic Space Flight

The closest that it’s currently possible to get to outer space for those outside of national space programs. This is your chance to sign up for three days of training followed by a space flight where you will get to travel at almost 2500mph, outside of the Earth's atmosphere.

Where: New Mexico When: From end of 2012 With whom: Virgin Galactic Cost: $200,000 Other: Only 500 people have signed up for the experience so far. Be one of the first 1000 civilians in space!

Survival Holiday

If you’re bored with Michelin Starred restaurants and concierge care, this might be just the thing for you: learn how to survive in the Amazon Jungle with nothing but a machete and then get the chance to test your skills in isolation.

Where: Amazon Jungle With whom: Bushmasters Cost: 1600 pounds Other: You will eat some weird and wonderful things (think insects), learn to look for water vines, learn how to light a fire without matches, and master many other survival skills
