The mother of pearl lining that mollusks line their shells with has been a prized decorative material for centuries. Long associated with the opulent elegance of years gone by, slowly it fell out of style as some how stuffy and old-fashioned. Now however, luxury watchmakers have started adorning women’s watches with the elegant mother of pearl glisten once again.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Rendez-Vous

A round, art-deco style watch that features a flowing mother of pearl face. Floral hour and minute hands accent the design, and a day/night display completes the picture. The cultivated elegance of this collection – dedicated to actress Diane Kruger – is also accented through the 60 diamonds that adorn the case.

Shimmering silver mother of pearl is also the perfect backdrop for a watch that features a moon phase display at 6 o’ clock. A 33.3mm rose gold case provides a stunning contrast with the spiral-engraved dial, and 273 diamonds of increasing size sparkle like the corresponding stars in the sky.

Breguet Reine de Naples

Luxury watchmaker Breguet has a lot to celebrate this year: it’s the 200th anniversary of the first wristwatch, created by Switzerland native Abraham-Louis Breguet for the king of Naples, and secondly, it’s also the tenth birthday of the “Reine de Naples” collection dedicated to royal watch pioneer Caroline Murat. To celebrate this latter point, the company has released a new Reine de Naples Mini model with a rose gold case, satin armband, and – you guessed it – a mother of pearl dial. The special oval shape resulted in the hour and minute dials being moved towards 6 o’ clock. In keeping with the current aesthetic trend, the Breguet Reine de Naples 8928 is adorned with 139 diamonds amounting to a combined 1.32 carats.

Omega De Ville Ladymatic

With the silver-skinned Nicole Kidman acting as the face of the campaign for Omega’s new De Ville Ladymatic watch, it’s only fitting that it feature silver shimmering mother of pearl. This new Ladymatic edition references the first automatic watch for women, first released in 1955. Available in white gold, rose gold, or stainless steel, a luxury version inset with diamonds is also available, costing up to 24,800 euro.

Chopard Imperiale Chronograph

With 18-carat white gold to set off the mother of pearl dial, the unusually large (40 mm) Chopard Imperiale offers an imposing elegance. 60 second, 30 minute, and 12 hour dials provide contrast with the simplicity of the face that features a sole 12 o’ clock roman numeral. If mother of pearl isn’t sufficient for your jewelry tastes however, the Imperiale is also available with any number of inset diamonds.
